Overview
Athersys developed MultiStem®, an allogeneic “off-the-shelf” adult stem cell product intended for a range of critical care indications. The most advanced clinical program was MASTERS-II for ischemic stroke. Interim analysis indicated more patients would be needed to achieve statistical significance on the primary endpoint. The company has also explored ARDS and other indications but has not achieved regulatory approval or commercialization. Financial difficulties have led to workforce reductions, restructuring, and ultimately Chapter 7 bankruptcy conversion in September 2024[5][6].
