Ecological Research & Development Group

The Ecological Research & Development Group (ERDG) is a non-profit organization primarily focused on the conservation of the world’s four horseshoe crab species. While an environmental group, ERDG is a critical stakeholder in the life sciences industry because horseshoe crab blood is the sole source of Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL), a reagent required by the FDA for endotoxin testing in all injectable drugs and implantable medical devices. The organization works closely with the biomedical industry to promote sustainable harvesting practices and the protection of spawning habitats to ensure the long-term viability of this essential medical resource. ERDG also facilitates international collaboration between conservationists and the pharmaceutical industry to balance ecological health with global healthcare needs.
