J F Macfarlan & Co was a pioneering Scottish pharmaceutical company founded in 1780, specializing in the extraction of opium alkaloids and the production of anesthetics. The company gained international recognition for its high-purity morphine, codeine, and chloroform, playing a critical role in the development of modern pain management and surgical anesthesia. Notably, the firm supplied chloroform to Sir James Young Simpson for his landmark use of anesthetics in medical practice. In 1962, the company merged with its long-time rival T & H Smith Ltd to form Edinburgh Pharmaceutical Industries (EPI). EPI was subsequently acquired by Glaxo in 1963, and the manufacturing legacy continues today under the name Macfarlan Smith. The company's historical contributions remain foundational to the pharmaceutical industry and the development of controlled substance manufacturing.
