Founded by the Lloyd brothers, including the renowned pharmacist and author John Uri Lloyd, the firm became the leading supplier for the Eclectic medicine movement. They were famous for their "Specific Medicines," which were high-quality, standardized plant extracts developed using innovative distillation and extraction techniques. The company played a significant role in the development of American pharmacy and pharmacognosy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1938, the company was acquired by S.B. Penick & Company, eventually becoming part of the legacy of modern pharmaceutical giants like Sanofi.
