Overview

Powers & Weightman was a prominent 19th-century American manufacturing chemistry firm based in Philadelphia, specializing in the production of medicinal alkaloids and fine chemicals. The company was most famous for its production of quinine, which was essential for treating malaria, and it became one of the largest chemical manufacturers in the United States. In 1905, it merged with Rosengarten & Sons to form the Powers-Weightman-Rosengarten Company. This entity was eventually acquired by Merck & Co. in 1927, significantly expanding Merck's manufacturing footprint and product portfolio in the United States.
