Company intelligence / Profile preview
Sal. Oppenheim jr. & Cie. was a historic German private bank that played a pivotal role in the development of the European biotechnology sector as a leading investment bank and underwriter. Founded in 1789 and headquartered in Cologne, the firm became a key financier for the German "Mittelstand" and was instrumental in the late 1990s for bringing several high-profile biotech companies to the public markets, including Qiagen and MorphoSys. While the firm was a financial institution rather than a drug developer, its specialized healthcare and life sciences team was highly regarded for its deep industry expertise and strategic advisory services. Following significant financial challenges during the global financial crisis, the bank was acquired by Deutsche Bank in 2010 and its operations were subsequently integrated into the parent company's wealth management division.
