Santarus was a specialty biopharmaceutical company focused on acquiring, developing, and commercializing proprietary products for gastrointestinal and related indications. At the time of its acquisition by Salix Pharmaceuticals in late 2013 for $2.6 billion, it had multiple commercialized drugs as well as a robust pipeline including biologics and small molecules targeting GI diseases and hereditary angioedema. Its lead marketed product was UCERIS for ulcerative colitis; other notable assets included RUCONEST for hereditary angioedema and rifamycin SV MMX in late-stage development for travelers' diarrhea. The company also completed early clinical work with the monoclonal antibody SAN‑300.
