Schimmel & Co. was a preeminent German chemical company founded in 1829, world-renowned for its pioneering work in the research and production of essential oils, fragrances, and flavorings. Based in Miltitz, near Leipzig, the company was a global leader in terpene chemistry and published the influential "Schimmel Reports," which served as the definitive scientific resource for the industry for over a century. While primarily focused on aromatics, its research laid the groundwork for modern pharmacognosy and the isolation of bioactive compounds from plants. The company's innovations in distillation and synthetic chemistry significantly advanced the quality standards for ingredients used in both the pharmaceutical and consumer goods industries. Following the reunification of Germany, the company's legacy and Miltitz manufacturing facilities were acquired by Bell Flavors & Fragrances in 1993.
