St. Margaret's Health

St. Margaret's Health was a regional healthcare system based in the Illinois Valley, operating two primary hospital campuses in Spring Valley and Peru, Illinois. Established in 1903 by the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation, the system provided comprehensive medical services including emergency care, obstetrics, oncology, and rehabilitation. In June 2023, the organization permanently ceased all operations and subsequently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing a combination of financial pressures from the COVID-19 pandemic, severe staffing shortages, and a catastrophic 2021 ransomware attack that crippled its billing systems. Following the closure, OSF HealthCare acquired the Peru hospital assets and several outpatient clinics to restore essential healthcare services to the local community.
