Overview

T & H Smith was a pioneering Scottish pharmaceutical company founded in 1827, renowned for its expertise in alkaloid extraction and the large-scale production of opiates. The company operated the Blandfield Chemical Works in Edinburgh and became one of the world's leading suppliers of morphine, codeine, and other medicinal chemicals. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, it played a critical role in supplying essential medicines to the medical profession and the military. In 1962, T & H Smith merged with Duncan, Flockhart & Co and Macfarlan Smith to form Edinburgh Pharmaceutical Industries (EPI). This new entity was acquired by Glaxo in 1963, integrating T & H Smith's legacy into the lineage of what is now GSK.
