Ward Blenkinsop & Co. was a prominent British pharmaceutical and fine chemical manufacturer founded in 1939. The company became a critical supplier of medicinal chemicals during World War II, specifically specializing in the production of sulfonamide antibiotics such as sulphadiazine. Beyond anti-infectives, the firm was a pioneer in the development of ultraviolet absorbers, marketing the well-known sunscreen agent Uvistat (mexenone). Headquartered in Wembley with significant manufacturing operations in Widnes, the company maintained a strong reputation for complex organic synthesis. In 1984, Ward Blenkinsop was acquired by the Harrisons & Crosfield group, which eventually transitioned into Elementis. Today, the company's legacy remains part of the history of the UK's mid-century industrial chemistry and pharmaceutical sectors.
