Company intelligence / Profile preview
Wyeth, originally founded as John Wyeth & Brother in 1860, was a prominent American pharmaceutical company that became a global leader in the development of prescription medicines, vaccines, and consumer healthcare products. Throughout its history, the company operated under the name American Home Products before rebranding to Wyeth in 2002 to reflect its primary focus on research-driven pharmaceuticals. Wyeth was a pioneer in biotechnology, notably through its acquisition of Genetics Institute, which led to the development of the blockbuster biologic Enbrel for inflammatory diseases. The company's portfolio also featured the widely used pneumococcal vaccine Prevnar and the antidepressant Effexor. In October 2009, Wyeth was acquired by Pfizer for approximately $68 billion, a move that significantly bolstered Pfizer's biologics and vaccine capabilities. Today, Wyeth's legacy continues through the many life-saving treatments that remain core components of Pfizer's product offerings.
