Drug intelligence / Profile preview
(-)-[18F]fluorobenzovesamicol (also known as (-)-[18F]FBVM) is a radiolabeled vesamicol derivative developed as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer targeting the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT). It is designed to visualize and quantify cholinergic terminal density in vivo, which is a key biomarker for assessing cholinergic dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and dementia with Lewy bodies. Preclinical studies in rodents have demonstrated that (-)-[18F]fluorobenzovesamicol has a high binding affinity (Ki = 0.9 nM) and selectivity for VAChT, showing a significantly higher striatum-to-cerebellum uptake ratio and superior signal-to-noise ratio compared to other tracers like (-)-[18F]FEOBV.
