Overview

(2,2-diphosphonoethyl)(dodecyl)dimethylphosphonium is a synthetic small molecule belonging to the bisphosphonate class of compounds[1][2]. Bisphosphonates are characterized by two phosphonate groups and are known for their ability to inhibit enzymes involved in isoprenoid biosynthesis. This compound has been studied as an inhibitor of geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase (GGPPS), an enzyme critical for protein prenylation pathways that are important in cancer cell proliferation and survival[6]. The mechanism involves binding to the substrate and/or product sites of GGPPS, interfering with its function. While structurally related to other bisphosphonates used clinically for bone diseases, this compound is primarily experimental and has been investigated mainly in biochemical and structural studies as a potential anticancer agent targeting GGPPS[6].
