Overview

(6S)-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate dicholine is a highly water-soluble dicholine salt of levomefolate, the biologically active form of folate. Developed by Sensory Effects (a Balchem company) and marketed under the brand name Optifolin+®, it serves as a direct methyl donor in the folate metabolic pathway. Unlike synthetic folic acid, this compound bypasses the enzymatic reduction steps required by dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), making it particularly effective for individuals with genetic polymorphisms in the MTHFR gene. It is primarily indicated for addressing folate deficiency and supporting folate status in women of childbearing age to prevent neural tube defects. Pharmacokinetic studies have demonstrated that the dicholine salt form possesses superior bioavailability and stability compared to traditional folic acid and other folate salts.
