(Pyr1)-Apelin-13 is a modified, endogenous peptide isoform of apelin-13, characterized by the substitution of the N-terminal amino acid with pyroglutamic acid. This modification is intended to enhance the peptide's stability against aminopeptidase degradation while maintaining its high potency as an agonist for the APJ receptor (apelin receptor), a G-protein-coupled receptor. Developed by CHU Toulouse in collaboration with INSERM researchers, (Pyr1)-Apelin-13 is being investigated for its potential to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus by improving insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis. Clinical studies, including Phase 2 randomized placebo-controlled trials, have utilized continuous intravenous infusion of the peptide during hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp procedures to evaluate its metabolic efficacy in diabetic patients.
