Drug intelligence / Profile preview
(R)-alpha lipoic acid is the naturally occurring enantiomer of alpha-lipoic acid, a vitamin-like antioxidant and essential cofactor for mitochondrial enzyme complexes involved in energy production and the catabolism of alpha-keto acids and amino acids. It acts as a potent antioxidant both intra-and extracellularly by scavenging reactive oxygen species and regenerating other antioxidants. The compound is used primarily as a dietary supplement for its antioxidant properties and has been studied for use in diabetic neuropathy, metabolic disorders, obesity management, hyperlipidemia, cancer adjunct therapy, liver ailments, and HIV-related conditions. In Germany it is approved as a drug for diabetic neuropathy[5][8][9][10].
