(S)-4,5-dihydroxy-2,3-pentanedione (DPD) is a small molecule that serves as the essential precursor to Autoinducer-2 (AI-2), a universal signaling molecule used by both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria for interspecies quorum sensing. Developed and supplied by OMM Scientific, DPD is primarily utilized as a research reagent to investigate bacterial communication mechanisms, including the regulation of biofilm formation, virulence factor expression, and motility. In aqueous solution, DPD exists in a dynamic equilibrium of linear and cyclic forms, which are recognized by specific bacterial receptors such as LuxP or LsrB. Beyond its role as a laboratory tool, DPD has been explored for potential therapeutic applications, including serving as a vaccine adjuvant or as a target for modulating bacterial infections by disrupting quorum sensing pathways.
