Overview

(S)-econazole is the S-enantiomer of econazole, an imidazole-class antifungal agent. Econazole acts by inhibiting fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme 14α-demethylase, which is essential for converting lanosterol to ergosterol—a key component of fungal cell membranes. Inhibition leads to increased membrane permeability and leakage of cellular contents, resulting in fungistatic or fungicidal effects. While racemic econazole is widely used topically for dermatophytoses and cutaneous candidiasis, the specific clinical use or approval status of isolated (S)-econazole as a single enantiomer appears experimental[5]. The compound has also been described as having some activity against Gram-positive bacteria.
