It acts as a boronate-based transition-state analogue and binds covalently to the active site serine residue (Ser70), inhibiting class A beta-lactamases such as TEM and CTX-M types in *Escherichia coli*. This compound has been studied for its ability to reverse resistance to penicillin antibiotics by inhibiting bacterial enzymes that confer resistance. It is not approved for clinical use and remains at the experimental stage[7][9].
