Overview

[(sec-butylphen)AuCl3] is a neutral, distorted square pyramidal gold(III) coordination complex featuring a 2-sec-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligand. Developed as a potential metallotherapeutic alternative to cisplatin, the compound demonstrates significant in vitro cytotoxicity against various tumor cell lines, including lung and head and neck cancers, often surpassing the potency of cisplatin. While it exhibits enhanced stability against biological reductants like glutathione compared to other gold(III) complexes, its in vivo efficacy in xenograft models has been limited, likely due to high binding affinity for serum albumin proteins.
