Overview

[1-13C] glucose is a stable isotope-labeled tracer used primarily as a research probe in metabolic neuroimaging and physiological studies. Unlike radioactive tracers, it contains the non-radioactive carbon-13 isotope at the C-1 position, allowing for the detection of its metabolic products via 13C magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Biologically, it is indistinguishable from native glucose, undergoing transport across the blood-brain barrier via GLUT-1 transporters and subsequent metabolism through glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. It is frequently utilized in clinical research, such as studies conducted by Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, to quantify cerebral glucose uptake and metabolic flux in conditions like type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
