It functions primarily as an antagonist of the brain's 5-HT(1A) serotonin receptors, although its (S)-enantiomer acts as a weak partial agonist. This radiopharmaceutical serves as a research tool to visualize and quantify 5-HT(1A) receptor distribution and availability in vivo. It aids in the study of neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as anxiety and depression, where these receptors are considered therapeutic targets.
