[11C]CUMI-101 is a carbon-11 labeled radiopharmaceutical and small molecule that functions as a highly selective partial agonist for the serotonin 1A (5-HT1A) receptor. It was developed for use in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging to quantify the density and distribution of 5-HT1A receptors in the living human brain. Unlike traditional antagonist radiotracers like [11C]WAY-100635, [11C]CUMI-101 preferentially binds to receptors in their functional, high-affinity G-protein-coupled state. This characteristic makes it a valuable research tool for investigating endogenous serotonin release and receptor availability in neuropsychiatric conditions. It has been primarily evaluated in clinical research settings for disorders such as bipolar depression, major depressive disorder, and suicidal behavior to understand the biological mechanisms of serotonergic dysfunction.
