Overview

[123I] 5-IA is a radiopharmaceutical used as a SPECT imaging agent for the in vivo quantification of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors containing the β2 subunit (β2-nAChRs), specifically the α4β2 subtype. It is chemically known as [123I]-5-iodo-3-[2(S)-azetidinylmethoxy]pyridine and is an iodinated analog of A85380. The compound binds with high affinity and selectivity to α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain. These receptors are implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and tobacco dependence. The radioligand enables non-invasive measurement of receptor density and distribution using SPECT imaging techniques[1][2][8]. Its mechanism involves acting as an agonist at these receptor sites, allowing visualization of their presence and function.
