Overview

[123I]-IBVM is a radiopharmaceutical compound used primarily as a highly selective radioligand for in vivo visualization of the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) in the brain. It is utilized with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging to study cholinergic neuron integrity, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. By binding selectively to VAChT, [123I]-IBVM enables noninvasive quantification of cholinergic terminal density and function, providing valuable insights into disorders characterized by cholinergic deficits[1][6].
