Overview

[18F]ASEM is a radiolabeled antagonist used as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agent for the quantification of α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7-nAChR) in the brain. It exhibits high affinity and selectivity for α7-nAChR (Ki ≈ 0.3 nM), making it suitable for noninvasive imaging studies in both preclinical animal models and humans. The tracer demonstrates excellent brain uptake and specific binding to regions rich in α7-nAChRs, such as the thalamus, insula, hippocampus, and frontal cortex. Its primary application is in neuroimaging research related to central nervous system disorders including schizophrenia and potentially other diseases involving cholinergic dysfunction or inflammation such as atherosclerosis[1][2][3][4][5][6].
