[18F]FEPPA is a radiolabeled small molecule used as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agent. It acts as a specific ligand for the 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO), which is upregulated in activated microglia and macrophages during neuroinflammatory processes. As such, [18F]FEPPA serves as a biomarker for glial activation and neuroinflammation in various neurological conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and long COVID. The compound is synthesized via nucleophilic substitution using a tosylated precursor and purified by HPLC to achieve high radiochemical purity suitable for injection[1][2][3][4]. Its primary use is research-based PET imaging to quantify TSPO expression in vivo.
