Overview

[18F]FIMX is a high-affinity radiopharmaceutical small molecule developed as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer for the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 1 (mGluR1). Developed by researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is designed to visualize and quantify the density of mGluR1 in the human brain. The tracer is an analog of the mGluR1 antagonist JNJ-16244480 and exhibits high brain uptake with favorable kinetics for modeling. mGluR1 is highly expressed in the cerebellum and is involved in synaptic plasticity and motor coordination; its dysregulation is implicated in various conditions, including cerebellar ataxia, schizophrenia, and mood disorders. [18F]FIMX serves as a critical biomarker tool to investigate the pathophysiology of these neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases and to assess target engagement for potential therapeutic interventions.
