[18F]GATT-44 is a fluorine-18 labeled small molecule radiotracer developed by Yale University for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of the GABA transporter type 1 (GAT-1) in the brain. GAT-1 is the primary transporter responsible for the reuptake of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) from the synaptic cleft, playing a vital role in regulating inhibitory neurotransmission. As a diagnostic imaging agent, [18F]GATT-44 is designed to cross the blood-brain barrier and bind specifically to GAT-1, allowing for the quantification of transporter density and occupancy in vivo. This tool is intended to facilitate research into the GABAergic system's involvement in various neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders, such as epilepsy and schizophrenia, by providing a non-invasive method to study GAT-1 distribution and function in the human brain.
