[18F]SF-DEVD-2 is a fluorine-18 labeled radiopharmaceutical developed by the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University for use as a molecular imaging probe in Positron Emission Tomography (PET). It is specifically designed to detect and monitor apoptosis (programmed cell death) in tumors by targeting the executioner enzymes Caspase-3 and Caspase-7. The probe incorporates the DEVD (Asp-Glu-Val-Asp) peptide sequence, which serves as a specific substrate for these caspases; upon activation of the apoptotic pathway, the probe is cleaved and retained within the apoptotic cells. This mechanism allows for the non-invasive, early evaluation of therapeutic efficacy in patients with solid tumors, including breast cancer, providing a potentially more sensitive measure of treatment response compared to traditional metabolic imaging with [18F]-FDG.
