[18F]SynVesT-2 is a fluorine-18 labeled radiopharmaceutical and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer that specifically targets the synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A). SV2A is a transmembrane protein found in synaptic vesicles throughout the central nervous system and serves as a reliable proxy for synaptic density. Developed to improve upon the clinical feasibility of earlier tracers like [11C]UCB-J and [18F]SynVesT-1, [18F]SynVesT-2 exhibits fast brain kinetics and high specific binding. These properties allow for a significantly shortened dynamic scan duration of approximately 40 minutes, compared to the 70-90 minutes required for its predecessors. It is primarily utilized in research and clinical settings to noninvasively quantify synaptic loss and cerebral blood flow in neurological disorders, most notably Alzheimer's disease.
