Overview

[2-13C] glucose is a stable isotope-labeled form of glucose in which the carbon-2 position is enriched with the carbon-13 (13C) isotope. It is used as a non-radioactive diagnostic tracer compound in metabolic studies to track carbohydrate metabolism in vivo (including glycolysis, glycogen synthesis, and gluconeogenesis) using techniques such as NMR spectroscopy and MRI. The compound is being utilized by the Joslin Diabetes Center in a Phase 4 clinical study to non-invasively assess post-prandial carbohydrate, hormone, and hepatic glycogen metabolism in individuals with and without post-bariatric surgery hypoglycemia (PBH).
