Overview

[6,6-2H2] glucose (also written as D-[6,6-2H2]glucose or D-glucose-6,6-d2) is a stable isotope-labeled form of glucose in which two hydrogen atoms at the 6-position are replaced with deuterium (2H). It is not a therapeutic drug but rather a diagnostic and research tracer compound used in metabolic studies. In clinical research, such as studies on post-bariatric surgery hypoglycemia (PBH) conducted by the Joslin Diabetes Center, it is administered via constant intravenous infusion (often as part of a dual-tracer technique paired with orally administered [U-13C]-labeled glucose) to measure the rate of appearance of meal-derived glucose, assess hepatic glycogen metabolism, and quantify endogenous glucose production (EGP) and carbohydrate flux.
