[F-18]FDG + [F-18]DPA-714-University of Alabama at Birmingham refers to a dual-tracer positron emission tomography (PET) imaging protocol being evaluated by the University of Alabama at Birmingham for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The strategy involves the sequential administration of two distinct radiopharmaceuticals: fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose ([F-18]FDG) and [F-18]DPA-714. [F-18]FDG is a glucose analog that accumulates in metabolically active cells, such as activated fibroblasts and inflammatory cells, following phosphorylation by hexokinase. [F-18]DPA-714 is a second-generation radioligand that binds with high affinity to the translocator protein (TSPO), which is overexpressed on the outer mitochondrial membrane of activated macrophages and fibroblasts. By utilizing both probes, researchers aim to characterize the heterogeneity of IPF by simultaneously assessing metabolic activity and macrophage-driven inflammation, potentially improving patient stratification and monitoring of treatment response.
