[Ga-68]PSMA is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging to detect and characterize prostate cancer lesions. It consists of the radionuclide Gallium-68 (Ga-68) conjugated to a ligand that specifically binds to the Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA), a protein highly overexpressed on the surface of prostate cancer cells. Upon intravenous administration, the tracer accumulates in PSMA-expressing tissues, allowing for high-contrast imaging of primary tumors and metastatic disease. This imaging modality is particularly valuable for the initial staging of high-risk prostate cancer and the localization of recurrence in patients with rising PSA levels. While several specific ligands exist, such as PSMA-11 and PSMA-617, the term [Ga-68]PSMA is frequently used to describe the general class of these imaging probes.
