[U-13C3] glycerol is a uniformly carbon-13 labeled isotope tracer used as a diagnostic research tool to investigate metabolic pathways, specifically hepatic gluconeogenesis. In clinical research conducted by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, it was utilized to evaluate the effects of the SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin on glucose homeostasis in viscerally obese adults without type 2 diabetes. By administering the compound orally and using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to measure 13C enrichment in plasma glucose, researchers can directly quantify the contribution of glycerol to the gluconeogenic pathway. It is not a therapeutic agent but a diagnostic tracer for metabolic flux analysis.
