Overview

α-13'-COOH, also known as α-13'-carboxychromanol, is a long-chain metabolite of α-tocopherol (vitamin E) formed through enzymatic degradation in the liver. It is detected in human serum, indicating its systemic bioavailability. This molecule exhibits a range of biological activities distinct from its precursor, including anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and anti-atherogenic effects. It has shown chemopreventive potential in colon adenoma cells, anti-inflammatory properties in atopic dermatitis skin models, and accelerates wound healing in mouse models. Its mechanism of action involves modulating cytokine expression, affecting macrophage foam cell formation, and influencing pathways like MAPK and NFκB. It also impacts lipid metabolism and can induce P-glycoprotein expression.
