Overview

1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC) is a synthetic phospholipid belonging to the class of phosphatidylcholines. It consists of a glycerol backbone esterified with two stearic acid (octadecanoic acid) chains and a phosphocholine head group. DSPC is widely used as an excipient in pharmaceutical formulations—especially as a key component in liposome-based drug delivery systems and vaccine adjuvants—due to its biocompatibility and ability to form stable lipid bilayers. In clinical products such as Lumason (a contrast agent for ultrasound imaging), it serves as part of the lipid shell encapsulating gas microbubbles. DSPC itself does not have direct pharmacological activity but acts by enabling or enhancing the delivery or stability of active drugs[5][7][2].
