Overview

1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DSPE) is a synthetic phospholipid belonging to the class of phosphatidylethanolamines. It consists of a glycerol backbone esterified with two stearic acid chains and a phosphoethanolamine head group. DSPE is amphiphilic and widely used as a component in liposome and nanoparticle formulations for drug delivery due to its biocompatibility and ability to form stable lipid bilayers. Its primary mechanism involves forming the structural matrix of liposomes or micelles that encapsulate therapeutic agents; these carriers can fuse with cell membranes or endosomes to release their contents intracellularly[6][7]. DSPE itself does not have direct pharmacological activity but serves as an excipient or carrier in pharmaceutical formulations.
