1-13 carbon leucine + deuterated water is a research tracer combination consisting of 1-13C leucine (carbon-13 labeled leucine) and deuterated water (2H2O, deuterium oxide). Developed for use in clinical studies by the University of Padova, this combination serves as a stable isotope tracer system to investigate lung surfactant metabolism and fluid dynamics in patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and Acute Lung Injury (ALI). 1-13C leucine acts as a metabolic precursor to measure the fractional synthesis rate and turnover of surfactant protein-B (SP-B), while deuterated water serves as a precursor for disaturated-phosphatidylcholine (DSPC)-palmitate and allows for the calculation of total body water and water turnover. This non-radioactive approach provides critical insights into the pathophysiology of surfactant deficiency or dysfunction in critically ill patients without the risks associated with radioactive isotopes.
