Overview

**Description:** 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (commonly abbreviated as 1MeTIQ) is an endogenous amine found in the mammalian brain. It acts as a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A and B (MAO-A and MAO-B), conferring neuroprotective effects by reducing oxidative stress through free radical scavenging. Additionally it antagonizes NMDA receptors and modulates the glutamatergic system to protect against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Preclinical studies indicate that it has antidepressant-like activity and antiaddictive properties—attenuating morphine and cocaine addiction behaviors in animal models—likely via gentle activation of dopaminergic/noradrenergic/serotonergic systems combined with MAO inhibition[1][2][4]. It also potentiates morphine analgesia while preventing tolerance and withdrawal symptoms[4]. Its unique pharmacological profile suggests potential for treating neurodegenerative diseases (such as Parkinson’s disease), depression and substance addiction[3][7].
