Overview

**1-Palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-(phospho-rac-(1-glycerol))** is a synthetic phosphatidylglycerol lipid molecule. It consists of a glycerophosphoglycerol backbone with palmitic acid at the sn‑1 position and oleic acid at the sn‑2 position. This compound is functionally related to hexadecanoic (palmitic) and oleic acids. It was used as a component of Surfaxin (a discontinued drug), which acted as an exogenous lung surfactant for treating infant respiratory distress syndrome by compensating for alveolar surfactant deficiency and reducing the risk of alveolar collapse[4][6][1]. In research settings it is widely used to study membrane biophysics due to its defined structure and role in mimicking natural pulmonary surfactants[5].
