Overview

This is a combination of two radiopharmaceuticals used for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain. **[11C]-Pittsburgh Compound B ([11C]PiB)** is a carbon-11 labeled thioflavin T analog that binds with high affinity and specificity to fibrillar amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques found in Alzheimer's disease. It enables quantitative and visual assessment of Aβ deposition in vivo but has limited clinical use due to the short half-life (~20 min) of carbon-11, requiring on-site cyclotron production[3][7][8]. **Florbetapir F 18** is an FDA-approved fluorine-18 labeled PET tracer that also binds to aggregated Aβ plaques. It has a longer half-life (~110 min), allowing for centralized production and broader clinical distribution[7][9]. Both agents are used primarily as diagnostic tools or research biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment by visualizing amyloid plaque burden in the brain. Head-to-head studies show strong correlation between their imaging results[1][5].
