Overview

12,13-diHOME (12,13-dihydroxy-9Z-octadecenoic acid) is an endogenous lipokine derived from brown adipose tissue (BAT) that is significantly upregulated in response to cold exposure and exercise. It serves as a signaling molecule that mediates metabolic benefits, specifically by promoting the recruitment of macrophages to brown adipose tissue and enhancing fatty acid uptake in peripheral tissues like skeletal muscle. Recent research has identified that 12,13-diHOME signals through a specific, previously uncharacterized G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) to drive these effects. The molecule is being investigated for its potential to treat metabolic disorders by modulating cell-cell communication within the adipose microenvironment and improving thermogenic function.
