13-cis-12-(3'-carboxyphenyl)retinoic acid is a synthetic retinoid derivative structurally related to isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid). It has been investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, including atopic dermatitis and psoriasis[3]. Like other retinoids, it is presumed to act as an agonist of nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RARs and RXRs), modulating gene expression involved in cell differentiation and proliferation. Its precise mechanism of action has not been fully characterized but is expected to be similar to other aromatic retinoids. There are no approved brand names or marketed products containing this compound as a single agent.
