Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This drug entry refers to a sequential prime-boost vaccination regimen consisting of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) and the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). PCV13 (Prevenar 13) contains capsular polysaccharides from 13 Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes conjugated to the CRM197 carrier protein, which induces a T-cell dependent immune response, promoting immunological memory and mucosal immunity. PPSV23 (Pneumovax 23) contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 serotypes, providing broader coverage through a T-cell independent mechanism. This sequential administration is evaluated in clinical trials, such as the MENPI study led by Thomas Benfield, to enhance the breadth and durability of protection against invasive pneumococcal disease in high-risk populations, including adults living with HIV.
