Drug intelligence / Profile preview
14(R,S)-[18F]fluoro-6-thia-heptadecanoic acid ([18F]FTHA) is a radiolabeled long-chain fatty acid (LCFA) analog used as a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer to evaluate and quantify exogenous free fatty acid (FFA) uptake and utilization (beta-oxidation) in vivo. Developed as a metabolically trapped tracer, [18F]FTHA enters cells via the same transport mechanisms as natural fatty acids and undergoes initial mitochondrial beta-oxidation steps before becoming trapped in the tissue due to its sulfur atom at the sixth carbon position. It is widely utilized in clinical and preclinical research to study myocardial, skeletal muscle, liver, and adipose tissue fatty acid metabolism in metabolic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and pre-diabetes, as well as to visualize abdominothoracic lymphatic drainage and thoracic duct flow.
