15N-thymidine + 2H-water is a combination of stable isotope tracers used for the quantification of human adipogenesis (the formation of new fat cells). 15N-thymidine is a nitrogen-15 labeled nucleoside that is incorporated into the DNA of dividing cells during the S-phase of the cell cycle, serving as a specific marker for cell proliferation. 2H-water (deuterated water) is a stable isotope of water that incorporates into both newly synthesized DNA and triglycerides. By administering these tracers and subsequently analyzing adipose tissue samples using mass spectrometry, researchers can calculate the turnover rates of fat cells and the synthesis rates of lipids. This methodology was specifically employed by Brigham and Women's Hospital in pilot clinical studies to investigate metabolic health and the dynamics of adipose tissue in humans.
