15Nitrogen(15N)-labeled sodium nitrate is a stable isotope-labeled small molecule used primarily as a metabolic tracer in clinical research to investigate the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide (NO) pathway. Developed and studied by Dr. Mark Gladwin at the University of Pittsburgh, this compound allows for the precise tracking of the in vivo conversion of inorganic nitrate to nitrite and subsequently to nitric oxide using mass spectrometry. The nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway serves as a critical physiological backup to the L-arginine-nitric oxide synthase (NOS) pathway, particularly under conditions of hypoxia or acidosis. By increasing the bioavailability of nitric oxide, the compound facilitates vasodilation, reduces blood pressure, and modulates platelet function, making it a subject of interest for the treatment and management of various cardiovascular diseases.
